The 2022 International Forum on South-South Cooperation and Trade in Services (the Forum), co-organized by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) and the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), took place at China National Convention Center in Beijing on 3 September. This event was attended, physically or virtually, by more than 600 participants from 31 countries, including representatives from government agencies, foreign embassies in China, international organizations, research institutes, academia, civil society organizations, business community, and the private sector. “Drinking Water Safety and Security Technologies for Developing Countries”, an S&T achievement of the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was released at the Forum.

Prof. YANG Min, Deputy Director of RCEES, was invited to attend the Panel Discussion session, where he shared the hands-on experience and reflections on the CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Water and Environment (CAS-TWAS CEWE) in collaboration with ANSO Environmental Technology and Industry Alliance to boost green development of the countries along the Belt and Road, and released the “Drinking Water Safety and Security Technologies for Developing Countries” at the Forum. Focusing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) and in response to the different technical needs of developing countries for drinking water safety and security, this achievement focuses on developing low-cost technologies, such as arsenic removal, fluoride removal, rainwater collection and purification, and clean water ponds. With talent cultivation as the starting point, South-South cooperation is carried out through capacity building, collaborative research and technology demonstration to enhance their drinking water safety and security capacity for the benefit of local people.

Under the theme of “Shaping a Global Greener Future Through South-South Technical Cooperation”, the Forum aimed to deepen the understanding of the role and impact of technical cooperation on accelerating the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTrC), optimize the patterns and pathways of SSTrC, support global economic recovery and green development, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind and achieving the UN 2030 SDGs.
